Formed to Be Inhabited

Days of Praise
Formed to Be Inhabited

January 31, 2010

"For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else." (Isaiah 45:18)

This verse is the key proof-text for the "gap theory," which attempts to accommodate the evolutionary "ages" of geology by placing them in a hypothetical gap between the first two verses of Genesis.  Genesis 1:2 states: "The earth was without form" (Hebrew, tohu), but Isaiah says, "he created it not in vain" (same word, tohu). Thus, it is argued that the earth became "tohu" long after the primeval creation, as a result of Satan's rebellion in heaven supposedly allowing the geological ages to be inserted between these two events.

Actually, the meaning of tohu is very flexible; it occurs 20 times and is translated 10 different ways, depending on context. In our text above, Isaiah was not writing about the initial state of the creation, but the purpose of the creation, that purpose being to provide a beautiful and appropriate home for mankind.

The translation "in vain" was required by Isaiah's context, just as "without form" best fits the context in Genesis 1:2. There is no conflict, since the two passages are dealing with two different subjects, and Isaiah's message simply extols God's ultimate and certain goal for His creation.

When God first created the space/time universe, only the basic elements of the earth (Genesis 1:1) were created, with neither structure nor inhabitant, but that was not its full purpose. God had merely "created" the heavens according to this verse. But then, with great care, He formed the earth, made the earth, and established the earth, and all this was done to make it ready to be inhabited by men and women who would share His image and know His love. CHRISTIANS, GOVERNMENT, & GOD

I PETER 2:13-25

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE SENSIBLE RESPONSIBILITY OF CHRISTIANS [v. 13-14a]

1. Submit [v. 13-14a, Acts 5:29]

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

2. Submit for the Lord’s Sake [v. 13, Colossians 3:23-25]

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

3. Submit for Conscience’s Sake [2:19, Rm. 13:5-8]

II. THE SIMPLE RESPONSIBILITY OF GOVERNMENT [v. 14]

1. Government is Instituted of God [v. 14, Rm. 13:1-2]

2. Government is Supposed to Punish Evildoers [v. 14, Gn. 9:6, Rm. 13:3-4]

3. Government is Supposed to Commend the good [v. 14, Rom. 13:3]

III. THE SELF-IMPOSED “RESPONSIBILITY” OF GOD [v. 15-25]

1. Reveal His Will [v. 15]

2. Reveal His Way [v. 16-20]

In a republic like ours you honor by righteous participation- voting, voicing approval and even disapproval. You don’t have to suffer in silence. That is not the intent of our freedoms. Acts 16:37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

3. Reveal His WORD [v. 21-25, Jn. 1:1ff]

Question of the Week - Are you sleeping through the sermon?

Q: Are you sleeping through the sermon?

A: Let's face it—sometimes your family doesn't get much out of the Sunday sermon. But with a little work, dads can greatly improve the family's listening experience. Try these "hearing aids":
Get more sleep. The Sunday service is not for sleeping; the night before is. This requires planning, especially for young people, who like to use Saturday night as an opportunity to stay up as late as possible.
Sit closer. Almost without exception, the best listeners are in front. There are some valid reasons to be in the back, but it will usually impede your listening.
Minimize distractions. If you must, find a better place to sit. If your children are the problem, "divide and conquer" by asking a relative or friend to sit with you. And don't permit the Sunday shuffle to the restroom.
Use your Bibles. It is difficult to follow the pastor's line of thought without seeing the Bible text before you. Teach the family to read it, underline it, and insert marginal comments.

You can find these and more helpful suggestions in our article Hearing Aids for the Whole Family.

Our Greatest Need

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals
Psalm 80:3  "Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved."

From beginning to end, Psalm 80 is a prayer for revival. The psalmist asked God to "stir up thy strength, and come and save us" (verse 2) and to "look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine." (verse 14)  God had not gone anywhere; He is still the same as He ever was. But sometimes in our lives, as in the lives of the people in Psalm 80, God is not manifesting Himself. In addition, God was not just indifferent to their praying--He was literally angry against their prayers (verse 4)! That is a frightening prospect from the General of heaven!

You see both revival and backsliding in this psalm. Verse 18 says, "So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name." If you are tracking in the wrong direction, it does not matter what sin you are or are not involved in--you still "went backward, and not forward." (Jeremiah 7:24b) The word quicken means "to make alive"--it is a revival word! What these folks needed was the ear of God (verse 1). That really is the goal of prayer--the ear of God. Without His ear, you are just wasting time.

This morning, I can tell you that when we need what God's people needed in Psalm 80, we should do what they did! Well, that begs two questions. First, what did they need? Second, what did they do? Did they need a return to the glory of the nation? Did they need an upward swing in the economy? Did they need a stronger army and fewer enemies? Did they need more respect in the world? The truth is, they needed all these things (and I suspect we have heard about these things, too). But is that what they (or we) really need?

Our greatest need today is not more respect around the globe or more money in our pockets. What we need is not something that God provides-we need God Himself! We are sheep, and sheep need a shepherd. While it is true that sheep need grass and water to live, what they truly need is a shepherd. So the psalmist asked the "Shepherd of Israel" to "turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine." Today, we need what they needed--we need God Himself!

So what should we do? Acknowledge God's ownership, ask for God's help, and then anticipate what God will do! (verses 1-3) Doesn't the fact that the psalmist asked God to "turn us again" indicate that God had worked and He could work again? The God of heaven has the resources and power to provide what you need today. Are you turned to God this morning?  When you need what the people in Psalm 80 needed, remember to do what they did!

Show What a Great Lover You Are

Show What a Great Lover You Are

From the writings of Sumner Wemp

Jan. 2010

Show what a great lover you are

Be the best

You may be the best golfer at your club, in your town, in the state but that is sawdust compared to being the best husband. You work at being a good hunter, fisherman, bowler, golfer or whatever you do but how much greater would it be if you and your wife worked as hard at being the best spouse you could be? The guys in your neighborhood, at the office, at your club all admire you for being a success in business but wouldn't it be far better if your children all admired you for being a success at marriage as a husband, as a father? Now honestly, doesn't that make sense?

To better your life you worked long hard hours while attending college or studying a trade. You must work as hard at having a better life in marriage. "Happy marriages don't happen, they are worked at." After being married for 56 years, I still have to work at it. My dear wife deserves all the effort I can put forth to make her happy. She is very content with what she has materially. Far more important is that we have a wonderful married life and I give her my all to make her content in marriage.

An example

Your children, your neighbors children, your friends children, your families children, all the children of the world deserves and needs you to be an example of a good husband or wife.

You do what you want to do

"Choose you whom you will serve" admonished Joshua, "but AS FOR ME..." Josh. 24:15. This is one of the greatest verses in the whole Bible, "as for me." The world can go to Hell if it wants to. People can live totally selfishly if they want. Christians can play games with God and with their lives BUT AS FOR ME. Kind sir, dear lady, make your choice. What about you?

Make a resolution for this new-year

O dear people, be the best lover for your husband/spouse. Love God first and foremost. Love each other. Love your children. WORK AT IT.  "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" 2 Cor. 4:18.

Prayer:  Father, help us all to be the best lover in our homes and in the whole world for eternity's sake and for Your glory, in Jesus name.

DO YOU WANT IT NOW?

MT. 11:25-30

Pastor Rick Jackson

We do don’t we? Before Christmas we sent Christmas presents to our daughter and son-in-law. He didn’t want to wait until Christmas- he wanted to open them “now”. We have instant coffee, oatmeal, grits, and any number of things because “we want it now”. Have you ever asked someone “when do you want this?” and been given the answer, “Immediately if not sooner!”? Well sometimes you can’t have it now, sometimes you have to wait, sometimes you have to be patient… BUT- NOT with what we are looking at tonight. You can have it now! You can have it immediately! As a point of fact, God does not want you putting this off. To what are we referring?

I. IMMEDIATE ACCEPTANCE [v. 28a] “Come unto me” - Jesus

1. Not Organizations- churches, temples, clubs, fraternal orders, secret societies

2. Not Others- preachers, priests, rabbis, prophets, guides, saints, angels, psychics, psychos, etc.

3. Not Optional- [John 14:6]

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 1:11-12 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Come to Jesus for immediate acceptance!

II. IMMEDIATE DELIVERANCE [v. 28b] “all ye that labor and are heavy laden”

1. Deliverance from Rejection “All ye” [Titus 2:11]

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2. Deliverance from Vexation (trying to earn what cannot be earned) [Eph. 2:8-9, Titus 3:5]
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

3. Deliverance from Depression [28c, 30] get out from under your heavy load

III. IMMEDIATE DIRECTION “I will give you rest”

You do not have to guess or worry about:

1. Who to Trust [v. 28c-29a]

2. Where to Look [v. 29b, Philippians 3:10]

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

3. How to Live [v. 29c] “ye shall find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light”

Proverbs 16:3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
Psalm 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

You Owe it to Him/Her

You Owe it to Him/Her

From the writings of Sumner Wemp

Jan. 2010

You owe it to him/to her

"Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry. But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command" 1 Cor. 7:1-6.

Do we need this today!
Fornication and adultery are at epidemic proportions today. "may you ever be captivated by her love" Pro 5:19 and the same goes for the wife. Love each other, enjoy each other, "Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife?" vs. 20.

The unpardonable sin, well almost. I spoke at a big men's conference years ago. A medical Dr. insisted on taking me to the airport. We had not gone a hundred feet when he blurted out, "My wife has not been a wife to me in over 8 months, what am I going to do." Another man, I had just led to Christ said, "My wife has not let me have physical relations with her in over two years." Another man said, "My wife refused me sex and I told her 10 years ago, I would never ask her again." Every counselor could tell you scores of stories just like these and of wives being deprived of this intimacy. Read the advice columns, it will shock you.
God has something to say about that "You don't have the power (authority) over your body" to deny your spouse this marital right. He says, "Defraud (deprive ye not) ye not one another...lest Satan tempt you for your incontinency (your lack of self control)." This is serious business. Believe me ladies, that desire and drive in your husband is uncontrollable except by the power of God. Kind sir, you owe it to your wife to give her that love, affection and intimacy she longs for from you. The simple truth is "obey God." Be like Peter and say, "Because you say so, I will." Lk 5:5.

O dear people let's be the kind of spouses that loves each other and supplies each others needs that we can give them, for their sake, for our sakes and for the kingdom of God's sake so the name of Christ is not hurt.

Prayer:  Father, bless this couple and may they meet each others needs for Your glory, in Jesus name

HOLY GROUND SPOTS

Pastor Rick Jackson

Years ago I heard Evangelist Wendell Calder preach a message on “Holy Ground Spots” which really spoke to my heart. The Lord laid this message on my heart recently and though it may have some similarities [I should hope] I did not go back and review Brother Calder’s message before preparing this one. May the dear Lord guide our thoughts to His Word!

Every person should have at least three holy ground spots. You can have more but you should have at least these three.

I. THE HOLY GROUND SPOT OF SALVATION [Acts 9:1-5]

1. This Cannot be Repeated [Jn. 3:1-8]

2. This Should be Remembered [Isaiah 51:1]

Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.
2 Timothy 2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

3. This Ought Be Referenced [Acts 9:1-5ff, 22:1-10ff, 26:9-15ff, I Cor. 15:8]

II. THE HOLY GROUND SPOT OF SURRENDER [Acts 9:6]

1. When- ideally at the moment of Salvation [Rm. 10:9-13]

2. What- identification with Christ by dying to self [Matthew 10:39]

He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
1 Cor. 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

3. Why- it is the way to live life to its fullest! [John 12:24]

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

III. THE HOLY GROUND SPOT OF SERVICE [Psalm 100:2]

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

1. Begin with presentment [Romans 12:1]

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2. Continue with Commitment [Job 5:8]

I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
Psalm 37:5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Proverbs 16:3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
1 Timothy 1:18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
1 Peter 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

3. Conclude with Contentment [Philippians 4:11]

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
1 Timothy 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

3. God expects you to have Good Behavior [v. 12]

III. THE WHY OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE [v. 9-12]

1. Because God has Completely Changed You [v. 9-10]

2. Because God Knows it is NOT Good for You [v. 11]

3. Because by Doing So You will Glorify God [v. 12, John 15:8]

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK - What's wrong with death and suffering?

Answers Weekly

Q: What's wrong with death and suffering?

Evolution requires death. At its core, Darwin's postulate appeals to the power of death to remove those less able to survive so that the "more fit" can take their place. Natural selection, in this Darwinian sense, toils mindlessly on, removing individuals, populations, and even entire species. Whether something—or someone—lives or suffers, Darwinism offers only the cold machinations of time and death. Anything more would require existential purpose, after all, and that cannot be allowed.
Evolution, in an atheistic worldview, is morally neutral. When tragedies strike, evolution cannot tell us something is detrimental. Death, after all, can neither be untimely or tragic, since death is the means by which "progress" is made.
If we take the idea of "survival of the fittest" to its logical conclusion, it seems almost absurd for anyone who accepts the story of evolution to think of death as being the enemy. Whether through human actions, animal attacks, or natural disasters, what value can we attach to those lives if they are nothing more than "stardust" after billions of years?
In fact, the consistent atheist could even rejoice that nature has eliminated competitors for resources with the death of those unable to survive such events. Of course, few, if any, rational humans would hold this viewpoint, and atheism certainly doesn't remove compassion. However, this is the ultimate fruit of Darwin's anti-God philosophy: no death can be bad according to evolution.

Older that dirt.

A "friend" sent me this one. Some of it pre-dates me but I remember most of it.

Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'
'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him.
'All the food was slow.'

'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?'

'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained. !
'Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it :
Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore Levis , set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card.
My parents never drove me to school. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow).
We didn't have a television in our house until I was 19.
It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people...

I never had a telephone in my room..The only phone was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line..

Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was.
All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers --my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week.  He had to get up at 6AM every morning.
Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?
MEMORIES from a friend :
My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it.. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons.. Man, I am old.
How many do you remember?
Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.

Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.

Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.

Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

Older Than Dirt Quiz :

Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about
Ratings at the bottom.

1.Candy cigarettes

2.Coffee shops with tableside juke boxes

3.Home milk delivery in glass bottles

4. Party lines on the telephone
5.Newsreels before the movie

6.TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (there were only 3 channels)
[if you were fortunate]
7.Peashooters
8. Howdy Doody

9. 45 RPM records

10.Hi-fi's

Foundations Out of Course

Foundations Out of Course

January 21, 2010

"They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course." (Psalm 82:5)

Christians sometimes wish they could call down God's judgment on the wicked, especially wicked rulers. In almost every civilization throughout history, men and women have been oppressed by their own despotic rulers or invaders from outside their nation's borders. It seems that the Jewish people and Christian believers have received more than their share of persecution, and it is a comfort to realize that there is biblical precedent for the grieved saint to call out to God for action and justice. In this psalm, the writer does just that.

The judges of the day were evidently quite unjust. The psalmist calls on them to "defend the poor and fatherless" (vv. 3-4), but his cries were not heeded. Our text tells us that the rulers were devoid of understanding and walked in darkness: "all the foundations of the earth are out of course."

In our day, those who defend animal rights advocate the killing of unborn children. Many cry "Protect the guilty" while they ignore the innocent victim. Adherents to academic freedom tell us that only evolution is science, and creation must not be allowed in schools. We must be tolerant of all viewpoints, say liberal professors, except the biblical worldview. Homosexuals seek favored status, calling good evil and evil good. Certainly something is "out of course."

Our confidence, however, rests in God, who "standeth in the congregation of the mighty" (v. 1). He sees the injustice and will act accordingly, as He sees best. It may be sooner or later than we would like, but He will act at the proper time, in the proper way. In the meantime, it is proper for us to pray as did the psalmist, "Arise, O God, judge the earth" (v. 8). Until then, "commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass" (Psalm 37:5). JDM

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

FROM EMAILS PEOPLE HAVE RECENTLY SENT ME...

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that at some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

It's so cold... I saw a Democrat with their hands in their own pockets!

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. - William Arthur Ward

Be the Lover God intended you to be

From the writings of Sumner Wemp

Be the best lover

Husbands, please read this. I know your wife will. Be a man and read and apply this to yourself.

How to love your spouse

"Walk in the Spirit" Gal 5:16 so you can be filled with the "fruit of the Spirit," LOVE and love your spouse as God would have you love each other. Oh what JOY this brings to both of you when you live like God intended you to live. Anger, jealousy, bitterness, are things that make you miserable and are "the works of the flesh" Gal 5:19. Now live like you ought to and love each other.

Go back to dating, courting.

That is what keeps the spice, the glow, the glitter, the honey of the honeymoon in your marriage. That is what is important in life. Like you did to court her and convince her to want to marry you now do the same things to help her enjoy being married to you. Just as you fixed yourself up to look at pretty as you could to win him, keep it up. You are competing with a world of women who have no morals and couldn't care less about you and will do all they can to attract your husbands attention by the way they dress and act.

O you romantic man and woman

Understand God tells how romantic we should be in the home [Prov. 5]. Give yourselves to each other so that your physical love life will be the outcome of your romantic love life. Often times we cut short the romantic love life, the foreplay if you please, therefore dampening what ought to be the highest physical expression of love in the home. Keep holding hands, hugging, and kissing. These are great physical exercises that keep you fit and give you a healthy happy marriage.

"May you ever be captivated by her love" (that is talking about sex!) Prov. 5:19. The Bible instructs us to do this.

Father, bless this couple. Help them to humble themselves and admit if they have not been the husband or wife they should be. Fill this marriage with all the joy and fun they thought it was going to be. In Jesus' name.

God loves you, I love you, now love each other for Jesus and your sake. all because of Calvary, sumner

I pray that you be a light in this dark world by having a wonderful godly marriage.
