Q: What's the difference between humans and animals?

A: The Bible clearly distinguishes between man and beast:
  • On the sixth day, Adam was created "in the image of God" and quite apart from the land animals through a clearly distinguished separate act of creation. The Hebrew word bara (create) is used three times in Genesis 1:27 to emphasize this act of creation.
  • Only man received the breath of God. In this way, he was given a spirit so that he transcends the world of the animals.
  • Only when Adam was created, did God "use his hands": "The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life" (Gen. 2:7). In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word yatsar is used to describe the actions of a potter who skillfully and imaginatively forms his vessels. In the same way, God used earthly matter for Adam's physical parts.
  • Only man can actually communicate with God. Only he possesses the gift of speech and of prayer by means of which he can express all his thoughts before his Creator. Man was created to be near and close to God. He is dependent on communion with God.

Today's question is taken directly from this book written by information scientist Werner Gitt. In it, Gitt critically analyzes and rejects the assumptions and consequences of the doctrine of theistic evolution, examining both its biblical and scientific ramifications.

One Savior for Every Sinner

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals

Acts 11:18  "When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life."

It is a good thing that God is not a racist.  If He were, we Gentiles would be in big trouble!  God led Peter to take the Gospel to Gentiles, which was an unheard of job for many people in Acts 11.  Peter said, "As God gave them the like gift as he did unto us . . . what was I, that I could withstand God?"

There is a great truth in Acts 11: the only pedigree that impresses God is the one available through His Son.  It does not matter if you are Jewish or Gentile.  If you are going to be a child of God, you are going to come through God's only begotten Son.  Every sinner needs the same Savior!

Many times we talk as if the Gospel is only for the "down-and-outers" and not for the "up-and-comers."  The Gospel is good for people below you and above you!  There are billions of sinners, but there is only one way to Heaven.  That is so hard for people to comprehend!  There are not many different ways; there are not several ways; there are not two ways; there is "THE way, the truth, and the life."  The Gospel is as generous as every sinner but as narrow as one Christ.

There is one Savior for every sinner, regardless of position, stature, salary, or nation.  When we are as generous with the Gospel as God is, every nation will know.  It is God's will for every sinner to be saved.  If any sinner will be saved, he will be saved exactly the same way-by trusting the one Savior, Jesus Christ.

God Has a Plan

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals
Acts 7:58  "And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul."

God may well do much more through the events of this day than He does in this day itself.  The results from today may come to maturity long after the sun sets, but God is working in this day and through this day.  In Acts chapter 7, Stephen preached a powerful message, and the hearers were "cut to the heart" and stoned Stephen.  Their coats, we are told, were laid at the feet of a man named Saul.  Does that name ring a bell?

Never count God out.  Regardless of what you have seen or wanted to see, there is always more than you can see and do.  God could see what even Stephen could not see that day.  There was a young man holding jackets that God wanted to save and use for His glory!

What do you see today?  We tend to see problems, but God has a plan.  Nothing ever happens beyond God's control or outside of His plan.  God took a Christ-rejecting, blasphemous murderer named Saul and made the Apostle Paul.  If you stop and consider it for a moment, this was a watershed event in the history of the church!  I doubt anyone thought about it that day!

This summer at the Ranch, counselors prayed with campers about thousands of decisions.  Only God knows the impact and full picture of a week of camp or a service at your church.  God is working.  He can see what you cannot see, and He can do what you cannot do.  The Lord wants to use you to accomplish His plan!

Question of the Week: Was Jesus married?

Q: Was Jesus married?

A: Earlier this week, headlines announced that a new discovery shows Jesus was married. These bold claims are based on the discovery of a papyrus fragment written in an ancient Egyptian language known as Coptic. According to the translation by Dr. Karen L. King, the tiny fragment contains these words: "Jesus said to them, 'my wife' . . ."
Of course, without the surrounding context or any other copies of this document, it is practically impossible to determine what this writing is really about. But for the sake of argument, let's assume this text should be understood in a straightforward manner and that Jesus was not using the term wife metaphorically. If true, should we start believing that Jesus was married? Not at all!
The papyrus is likely from the fourth century AD—three centuries after Jesus died and rose. Even as a scholar known for her favorable treatment of various non-canonical texts, King advised that this does not prove in any way that Jesus was married, only that some early groups had a tradition that Jesus was married.
Continue reading five key reasons to believe Jesus was not married.

Get EquippedWhy 27?
The New Testament is composed of 27 books, but why only these particular books? Why are other writings such as the "Gospel of Judas" not included in the canon of Scripture? Author Brian Edwards skillfully answers these questions by examining the history, age, and content of the manuscripts.
