QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Who can define marriage?

Q: Who can define marriage?

A: This week the U.S. Supreme Court announced their decisions on two cases relating to the definition of marriage. Ultimately they overturned a federal law (and a similar state law) which defined marriage as "only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife."
But this definition did not originate with Congress. Even our Declaration of Independence does not offer this definition, but it rightly appeals to the fact that our natural rights as free people come from our Creator. It is our Creator, then, who can and does define the parameters of this most sacred and fundamental of societal institutions:
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)
Continue reading to learn more about the Court's decisions and why our primary goal should be to lead individuals to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

News to Know Quick Look

Today's question was also a News to Know item. In case you missed it, this week we also featured the following News to Know items:
"Partners in Slime": We have known that mucus produced by our bodies provides a protective barrier against the dirty world of dust and bacteria. A recent discovery identified bacteria-attacking viruses that inhabit mucus in great numbers and also contribute wonderfully to the body's immune system. These beneficial viruses are a reminder that the world God created was a very good world in which even viruses would have had a useful role.
Malaria in the News: Two separate but related strains of research endeavor to target malarial mosquitos. In the first case, new findings may lead to the development of effective mosquito traps that target these mosquitos. In the second case, microbiological manipulation of infected mosquito populations may be effective even for the deadliest strains.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

You cannot do God's work without God's power. — John R. Rice

Biblically speaking, freedom doesn't mean being able to do whatever you want. Freedom is the ability to function the way God designed you to function.
We can truly live in freedom if we are truly following Christ... as Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.' (John 8:31-32)." -- John M. Njoroge
I'm not nearly as worried about the IRS or the gov't seeing my emails and phone calls as I am that God Almighty knows my thoughts, motives and words I say. "Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!" - Butch Callahan
I prefer and purpose to rejoice and walk in Truth, rather than be rankled by headlines. All this in grace. - Scott Mitchell

Prophecy Today Devotions
June 27, 2013

Jimmy DeYoung
Thank you for reading my Prophetic Daily Devotionals!

Please visit my website to learn more Bible prophecies being fulfilled in these last days.

I Kings 1:39

And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.

For further reading - I Kings 1:28-40

The time is around 3,000 years ago as we come to the record of King David anointing his son Solomon to be king of all of Israel. It almost did not happen this way for another son of David, Adonijah had plotted to seize the kingdom from his stepbrother Solomon.

When their father, King David, learned of the plan he had Bathsheba call a member of the King's staff to his death bed to make certain Solomon was crowned King. Bathsheba brought Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet to anoint Solomon King of Israel.

It is interesting to note that this prophet Nathan is the same prophet that told King David that he would not be allowed to build the temple. Instead, the Lord would set it up so that the first Temple would be built by David's son, Solomon.

Nathan also is key in the giving of the Davidic Covenant, II Samuel 7, to David. It was Nathan who helped select Solomon to be the third king of Israel and one of the ones to anoint Solomon.

God had promised David that one of his seed would rule on the throne and also play a key role in the building of the permanent "worship center" of the Lord, the Temple. That promise will ultimately be fulfilled by Jesus Christ who will return to earth and build His Temple, Messiah's Temple, Zechariah 6:12. The Lord Jesus will also reign from that Temple as the King, Zechariah 6:13.

Thus we have seen the first step in the long journey, over the centuries, to Jesus through the Davidic line. But, I want you to notice something else in this passage.

Nathan, the prophet and Zadok , were to bring Solomon to the Gihon River, which is located in the city of David, the original site for Jerusalem. It was at the Gihon that these men would anoint Solomon to be king over Israel.

Maybe you remember where you have heard of that river, the Gihon, before. If not, look back to Genesis 2. The Gihon is one of the rivers mentioned in the reference to the Garden of Eden, Genesis 2:13. In fact, the Gihon is the river, the one river, that flowed out of the Garden of Eden and became four rivers somewhere outside of the Garden, Genesis 2:10.

This text is telling us that, as Jewish scholarship has believed for almost 6,000 years, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is the original site of the Garden of Eden. (See my audio series, Return to Eden)

One of David's seed will rule from a Temple in the original Garden of Eden one day. That one, from David's seed, is Jesus Christ, the same member of the Godhead that performed the act of "Creation", Colossians 1:16, in the Garden of Eden.

Where Jesus started everything Jesus will rule and reign from forever, the Garden of Eden. By the way, this fact about the Garden of Eden is also believed by the Muslim world as well. That is why the Muslims don't want the Jews in Jerusalem.

The current events that you see with a focus on the city of Jerusalem are evidence that Jesus is making ready to call all Christians out of this world at the Rapture. The Rapture could happen at any moment. You must make sure that you are ready.

PRAYER THOT: Because I am prepared, help me to be pure and productive as I await His return.

THE UNPREDICTABLE CHRIST

JOHN 8:1-11

Pastor Rick Jackson

Last week I preached on The Predictable Christ. We like to think everybody is predictable- we know so much about them- but it is a marvel that Christ, with so much about Him given to us, remains unpredictable in many ways [His return date being just one example]. We know He will return [predictable since He always keeps His Word] but we don’t know when- an unpredictable time- [since He always keeps His Word]. Let us open the Scriptures and see why “The Predictable Christ” is also “the Unpredictable Christ”.

I. HOW IS CHRIST OFTEN UNPREDICTABLE?

1. In His Actions [Jn. 4:27, 2:13-17]

2. In His Words [Jn. 2:18-21]

3. In His Inaction [John 11:1-10]

II. WHO FINDS CHRIST TO BE UNPREDICTABLE?

1. The Enemies of Christ Found Him to be Unpredictable [Lk. 6:1-11]

2. The Family of Christ Found Him to be Unpredictable [Lk. 8:19-21]

3. The Friends of Christ Found Him to be Unpredictable [Lk. 9:52-56]

III. WHY IS CHRIST OFTEN UNPREDICTABLE?

1. Christ is Different in His Person [Mt. 16:13-20]

2. Christ is Different in His Planning [Mt. 16:21]

3. Christ is Different in His Pattern of Thought [Mt. 16:22-25, Is. 55:1-9ff.]

ENDING WITH HONOR

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals

Judges 9:54  "And he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. . . ."

This spring, a man jumped from the Empire State Building and only suffered a broken ankle.  How was this possible?  Well, he leapt from the top floor but landed on the next floor down.  Talk about adding insult to injury!

It is not a pleasant topic to discuss, but how would you choose to die?  Your answer is probably, "Wil, I don't want to die!"  That is fine, and I would agree.  Most of us do not have a specific way we want to die, but all of us want to end honorably.

Ending honorably is not a matter of the way you die; it is a matter of the way you live.  You don't choose to die; you will die (Hebrews 9:27).  You do, however, have the choice of how you will live.

Abimelech was a man consumed with his own honor.  He did whatever it took to get want he wanted from people.  Ironically, a man possessed with building himself and destroying everyone else was done in by a woman and a rock!  He "fell on the sword" (with an assist from his armourbearer) to keep from being killed by a woman.

Abimelech didn't die dishonorably because a woman dropped a rock on his head; he died dishonorably because he lived dishonorably.  The truth is, you cannot end honorably if you don't live honorably!  Most people try all kinds of antics to hold on to their sense of self-importance.  Don't seek to be promoted; seek to serve the best you can where you are!

If all seek to be prominent, that will be shallow and pointless.  If you seek to be productive, God can take care of promoting you to the most productive place for you.  Remember, ending with honor requires living with honor today.

THE CROSSROADS OF LIFE

LUKE 9:18-26

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE PERSON OF THE CROSS

1. A Specific Person [v. 18-20]

2. A Specific Purpose [v. 21-22a, 19:10]

3. A Specific Proof [v. 22b, 11:29]

II. THE PATTERN OF THE CROSS

1.  The Cross Exhibits the Power of God [1 Cor. 1:17-18, Rm. 1:16]

2.  The Cross Exhibits the Peace of God [Col. 1:20-29]

3.  The Cross Exhibits the Glory of God [Gal. 6:12-18

III. THE PERSONALIZATION OF THE CROSS

1. A Denial of Self [v. 23a, 24-25]

2. A Daily Surrender [v. 23b, 1 Cor. 15:31, Gal. 2:19-20]

I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

3. A Divine Satisfaction [v. 23c, 26, Mt. 10:32]

Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Why do you remember things?

Q: Why do you remember things?

A: A critical function of our brain is to sort out what we should remember and not remember. God designed our brains so we can focus on the important things and not get lost in insignificant details.
Memories are believed to go from short- to long-term memory by reinforcement. Initially, the synapses involved in a memory trace are very weak. However, with repetition or a link to strong emotions, the connections become stronger and stronger.
God designed the brain's synapses to help us by literally reinforcing our memories when we meditate on truly important things. What are you remembering?
Continue reading to learn more about how memories are made, and how God wants His people to remember Him and what He has done.

News to Know Quick Look

Sizeable Sturgeons Set Evolutionary Speed Records? Are sturgeons living fossils or evolutionary fast-trackers? A new study proposes that these fish are evidence of rapid, observable evolution. But observable variation within a kind does not add new genetic information and is not evidence of molecules-to-man evolution.
Show and Tell: What Can Chimps Tell Us? Many evolutionary linguists believe a child learning to talk recapitulates the evolutionary steps that ape-like ancestors trod as they learned to speak and think abstractly. But only humans, created in God's image, are capable of communicating unique and creative abstract thoughts with language.
Cousin Achilles: The Little Primate That Could: Ten years of analysis of the tiny primate dubbed A. achilles has led some evolutionary researchers to conclude this animal is a missing link between two different types of primates. But this study is really a marvelous example of comparative anatomy, showing variation within a species. This prompts the question "what was it?" not "what was it becoming?"
